Rahul Gandhi Detained by Delhi Police During Opposition “Vote Chori” Protes

The Incident

On August 11, 2025, senior leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sanjay Raut, and Sagarika Ghose, attempted to march from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi. Their protest was in opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, citing allegations of potential voter disenfranchisement

Why They Protested

The march aimed to spotlight how the sudden electoral roll update could unfairly affect marginalized groups—particularly the poor and religious minorities—who may lack required documentation such as birth certificates or passports. Critics compared the revision to the 2019 Assam citizenship exercise, warning of similar consequences.

What It Signals

This detainment underscores growing tensions between the opposition and electoral authorities. Supporters say the protest was essential to preserving democratic integrity and ensuring every eligible vote is counted fairly. Critics, however, have dismissed these actions as politically theatrical.
